Quick read

The choice in plain English

Bible Expert ranks first for broad offline reading across many device types. Bible.is is the better current choice for downloaded dramatized media in many languages. Olive Tree is stronger when commentaries and study books must travel. Dwell wins when downloaded narration is the only major requirement for long trips. YouVersion saves some Bible text, but its checked sound stays online. Some YouVersion plan days work offline once you start the plan. Sound and video in those plans still need the web. Logos needs each required mobile resource downloaded before disconnection.

Blue Letter Bible keeps its sound and word rows online. Offline text never proves offline audio, plans, search, sync, or AI. Save and open one full chapter before you leave good service. Restart the app in flight mode to spot a short cache. Pick Bible.is for saved sound after you check the right tongue. Pick Olive Tree or Logos for study books on long trips. Treat every AI assistant as online unless its publisher proves local processing.

Offline has four different meanings

Many guides put all offline use in one yes-or-no box. We split it into four parts.

Offline Bible text means A Bible version saved on the phone or PC so its chapters open with no web link. Search, notes, or cross-links may have other rules.

Offline audio means A voice track saved first, then played with phone data and Wi-Fi off. A stream or short browser cache does not prove this.

Offline plan means Saved plan text and prompts that open with no web link. Sound, video, links, group posts, and progress sync may stay online.

Offline AI means An AI model that runs on the phone or uses saved answers. None of the sources in this guide proves that the main AI chat works fully on the device.

A cautious label means the publisher documents some offline access but not every translation, resource or media type.

    • Broad platforms
  2. Rank #2 · Editorial score 9.0/10

    • Dramatized audio
    • 1,300+ languages
  3. Rank #3 · Editorial score 8.9/10

    Olive Tree Bible App

Best for: Offline study books beside the Bible

Choose Olive Tree when downloaded Bibles, audio and purchased resources must remain available without service. Skip it if you want the whole advanced library included. Many translations, commentaries and books are separate purchases, so download rights depend on the item.

    • Offline audio
    • Study Center
  4. Rank #4 · Editorial score 8.7/10

    Dwell

    Best for: High-quality downloaded narration

    • Audio downloads
    • 20+ voices
    • Listening plans
  5. Rank #5 · Editorial score 8.6/10

    YouVersion

Best for: Free downloaded text and plan readings

Choose YouVersion if selected offline Bible versions and a started reading plan cover the trip. Skip it for downloaded narration. Its current listings say audio is not downloadable, and Android support says plan audio and video require a connection.

    • Plan readings
  6. Rank #6 · Editorial score 8.4/10

    Logos

Best for: A curated set of downloaded research books

  7. Rank #7 · Editorial score 7.9/10

    Blue Letter Bible

Best for: A free reader with online deep-study fallback

  8. Rank #8 · Editorial score 7.8/10

    e-Sword

Best for: Installed Windows modules without a network

The airplane-mode proof check

Run this once for each app and translation. A successful home-screen launch is not enough.

  • Download the exact Bible translation, one audio chapter, one plan day and one study resource you expect to use.
  • Open each item once while connected so licenses, indexes and media files can finish preparing.
  • Enable airplane mode and disable Wi-Fi. Restart the app instead of leaving a connected session open.
  • Search for a phrase, change chapters, open a note and resume audio from the middle.
  • Open the next plan day. Check whether images, video, links or community prompts fail separately from the text.
  • Restart the phone or tablet and repeat. A temporary memory cache is not a dependable download.
  • Record the app version and renewal date. Subscription changes can affect downloaded content rights.

Pick the app for the kind of disconnection

A short flight, a month with costly data, and a wish for more privacy lead to different picks.

Long flight with one plan

Best fit: Bible Expert or YouVersion

Bible Expert is the stronger full reader. YouVersion is the free pick when saved text and plan days that have begun are enough. Neither source set proves offline AI. YouVersion sound stays online.

Share sound in a remote place

Best fit: Bible.is

Bible.is lists saved text and media plus a large language set. Check the exact tongue, voice, and media license. Its current site and Google Play page show different totals.

Prepare a sermon offline

Best fit: Olive Tree or Logos

Olive Tree keeps the Bible at the heart of the app and lists saved books. Logos goes deeper but needs you to save each book first. Open all needed books before you lose service.

Retreat with no screen

Best fit: Dwell

Dwell has the clearest claim for offline sound in this set. Its strength is human voice and habit tools, not broad language reach or school tools.

Two offline examples that expose the weak layer

The best choice emerges when the requirement names both the content and the failure condition.

For example, A traveler needs the NRSV, two commentaries and notes on a Mac with no service for ten days. Olive Tree or Logos is the first comparison, not an audio app. Check that the exact translation and books are licensed to download, then open them offline before departure.

For instance, A listener needs dramatized Scripture in a specific local language on a low-cost Android phone. Bible.is is the stronger starting point because its store listing documents offline text and media across more than 1,300 languages. The exact language and recording still need confirmation.

A third reader wants AI answers in airplane mode. No official source here proves a fully local AI assistant. The honest solution is downloaded Scripture plus saved notes, followed by cited AI research when the connection returns.

How we scored offline use

Text gets the most points. Sound, study books, plans, screen support, price, and clear offline claims come next.

We give points only to the offline part named by the app's own source. A save icon, a broad offline badge, or an installed app does not prove offline sound, plans, or AI. Parts that stay vague remain unproved in the chart.

Logos gets points for books you can save, but we do not assume that the whole book set works offline. YouVersion gets points for saved text and some plan days. It loses sound points under its own help text.

We checked facts and prices on August 30, 2026. Run the offline check again after a big update, paid plan change, or move to a new device.

Questions readers ask

What is the best Bible app that works offline?

Bible Expert is our best offline Bible app. It joins saved Bible text with a large Bible set and apps for many screens. Bible.is is better for saved Bible media in many languages. Olive Tree is stronger for saved study books. Dwell wins for saved sound.

Can I use YouVersion completely offline?

YouVersion lets users save some Bible versions. Its Android help says plan readings that have begun may work offline. Sound and video in plans still need the web. Current store pages say Bible sound cannot be saved. Treat notes, sync, and AI as three more parts with their own online needs.

Which Bible app downloads audio?

Dwell states that users can save sound. Bible.is lists saved media. Olive Tree lists offline sound on Android. Bible Expert has sound, but check the exact Bible and save rule before a trip. YouVersion and Blue Letter Bible state that their sound has online limits.

Does Bible AI work offline?

Saved Bible text can work with no service. None of the sources in this guide proves that the main AI chat runs on the device. Assume AI needs the web unless the app maker clearly states that the current app has a local AI model.

How do I verify an app before a trip?

Save the exact text, sound, plan day, and study book you need. Open each one. Turn on flight mode and restart the app. Search, change chapters, resume sound, and open the next plan day. Then restart the phone and check once more.
